Running Accomplishments:

High school (in San Diego) I ran a 16:40 5k and a 4:33 mile.  Have run 11 marathons.

PR - Ogden 2009 - 2:55:10

Haven't done a 5k or 10k or half in a long time.  I just enjoy doing my regular daily runs and then hittin' the Marathons.  I might slip in some shorter/faster races this year.

Short-Term Running Goals:

Drop some more weight (get down to 150),  keep Pr'ing, and try to stay injury free.  Get a 2:46:42 or better in a marathon - I wanna beat Lance's PR!!

Get out on more trails around the valley and enjoy the scenery.

Long-Term Running Goals:

Focus on marathons and possibly ultras? Keep healthy and lean.

Personal:

Married with 2.95 girls.

Nice job. Jealous of the miles. You should try to tag along with Mary Ann S. (on the blog and running with Sasha and his gang) for some of their speed. When's your next race?

From mattk on Tue, Mar 10, 2009 at 10:26:26 from 69.27.13.147

Hey Michelle! I've been pretty lazy on the blog lately. I'm guessing you're dinged up a little? You must be very frustrated to not be out running full-bore. Hope you're back at it soon!! I'm actually doing Boston next month. I've been running a bit, but don't have any great expectations for it. This winter has been hard for me to get into a good, consistent rhythm.

I'd run with Sasha if (1) I wasn't a wuss and could handle the cold (I really hate running/sweating in a bunch of layers; I get claustrophobic). (2) I could wake up when it's dark out! Summer is much, much easier for me.

10 miles on treadmill @ 2 % incline.  2 miles at 7:30/mile and then 7 at 6:31 and last .9 at 6:00/mile.  Felt really good and relaxed at end.  Overall 6:40/mile.  I'm starting to question whether or not my treadmill is calibrated right.  I always used to feel my treadmill and trail runs were pretty similiar, but now my treadmill runs seem so much easier.  I'm not sure if the motor wears down and doesn't keep the same speed over time or not, but I'd like to test it out.  Does anyone have a measuring wheel?

Looks like you're on your way to beating Lance this year. I know my home treadmill is not calibrated very well. In contrast, the higher end ones I run on at the gym seem to have a good correlation. Perhaps your runs are just getting easier because you are getting so studly.

From mattk on Wed, Mar 11, 2009 at 11:27:11 from 69.27.13.147

Well, I was really trying to say that in a round about way!! No, I really think it must be off a little.

I think I'll try and shoot for a 2:55-3:00 at Boston and see where it takes me (No beating Lance this year). I'd rather be more conservative and leave some in tank than make Boston a horrible experience. Priority 1 this year is to enjoy the experience.

Josse/Kelli,

I'm actually doing boston in a month, and am really excited for the experience, but I'm holding my expectations in check. I'd be really happy to break 3 there, but for sure I'm not at Mr. Armstrong's level yet!

And yes Josse, It feels awesome to get on the trail again, though I don't mind the TM at all (It's about the only time I have to catch up on all my recorded shows).

20 Miles on trail 8:15/mile average.  Really drained.  Saw Sasha & Jeff on trail doing their tempo run.  Had to decline Sasha's invitation to run as much of it with them as I could.  I think that would have been 1/10th of a mile.  I usually have to really regulate my long runs to try and keep them slow, but today it just came natural.  I couldn't have gone any faster if I tried.

From mattk on Wed, Mar 18, 2009 at 12:40:40 from 69.27.13.147

I'm not sure what my definition of fast is. If someone can run more than 5 miles at a certain pace, is it not a fast pace? I usually just count it all as slow.

I've noticed you've done some awesome downhill stuff lately Paul. I wish I had a decline-capable TM. I need to start getting my legs ready for downhill marathons again.

Hey, sometime we should get several people and drive a car to the top of South Fork and run down, then drive back up and run down again.

Its about 8-9 miles from the parking lot at the top to the subway/gas station at the mouth of the canyon. Would be good training for all the downhill runs that we get here in UT.

Matt, I see you started you blog up again at the beginning of March. I had stopped checking it since you weren't posting anything. I did a quick review of the recent entries and it looks like you are getting in some good training runs and are probably not too far off your training plan. I'm shooting for 3 hours at Boston and feel like I have a realistic chance at it. I'll probably aim for about 1:31 on the first half just like at SGM. The difference is the second half of Boston is more difficult than the 1st half unlike SGM. As it gets closer we'll have to try and find a place we can meet up at the start. It's crazy there with all the runners but hopefully we can find each other.

From mattk on Tue, Mar 24, 2009 at 16:26:17 from 69.27.13.147

I've been doing alright, and I feel I'm in just as good of shape as I was for St. George, but what makes me less optimistic is that my bib number (for a 2:59 qualifying time) usually finishes around 3:10 at Boston. I'm guessing this is because a lot of people aren't ready for a spring Marathon, but I'm also wondering if it is just because it is a tougher course, amoung other factors. I don't want to go in thinking "3:00", and then kill myself on that second half, as you mentioned.

How have your previous Boston times compared to your other marathons those years?

From Rhett on Tue, Mar 24, 2009 at 17:02:07 from 170.215.58.122

Last year I ran a 3:15 at Boston but I qualified with a 3:15 as well. The year before I ran a 3:17 at Boston and had qualified with a 3:11 (which was my PR before SGM this year). I feel like I am in much better shape now than I was going into SGM and that is why I have hope to go sub 3, but it will be tough. Weather will also be a major factor as to wether I will go for it or not.

Well Matt, all you can do now is get that good sleep and good eating and some quick paced runs, but not too long to keep the legs fresh. No more super long runs, they'll only hurt from this far out. I think you will do great at Boston. I was thinking while I was running this morning on how we could meet up at Boston with all the chaos that goes on around there. The best plan I could come up with is meet at the front of the bag drop off bus for your bib # like half hour before race time. Give me any thoughts you have on that.

10 Miles in Lehi.  Watching our nieces at their house, so went out for a run at 10pm on the dark road that parallels the freeway and headed up the hill and then down into Draper past the prison.  Had a nasty JCW burger and fries sitting in my throat ready to come out the entire run.  I actually liked the place before the burger I had tonight.  You know how if you throw up from food poisoning, you have a hard time eating that food again?  Well that run did it for me for JCW's even though I never threw up.  I actually ran okay despite the setback. Averaged 7:06/mile and finished with some sub 6:20 miles on the downhill.

So Matt, are you ready for the taper? Yeah, we need to figure a time to meet and then we can hang for a while before the race. The drop off busses are on the way towards the starting line, but wouldn't be to far out of the way and since they are numbered by bib #s might be the easiest way to have a specific place to meet. After my 1/2 yesterday, that I didn't run all out, I'm feeling more confident about the sub 3 thing. I think I will try and run the first half right at 1:30 and hopefully still have a lot left to get up those Newton Hills.

From mattk on Mon, Apr 06, 2009 at 00:24:20 from 69.169.164.230

Sounds good. I think it would be nice to talk before/run for a little while, but it probably wouldn't make too much sense to try to stick with each other for much of the race (due to how awesome you're running, and because of all the people in the race). I think 1:30 is definitely going out too fast for me, but should be very manageable for you. Hey, how's the humidity out there this time of year? Did you notice a difference at all/affect you at all?

From rhett on Mon, Apr 06, 2009 at 00:44:49 from 216.67.216.116

Last year the humidity really got to me and I did not stay hydrated enough. The sun was out and it was in the upper 60s, but the humidity killed me. The year before were were running in a terrible winter storm and I only took my coat off for about a mile in the middle of the race and then quickly put it back on. Hopefully we get something in between the two this year.

Wow, that is a great time moving back up the canyon. Are you sure you don't want to go for the sub 3 with me at Boston? That training run tells me you are more than ready. Now get some good tapering in so the legs will be rested.

Rhett,

I've been debating the whole 'go for broke' or be conservative for the last month. I don't know about sub 3. I guess I get miffed by how it seems that everyone underperforms at Boston. I'm really worried about the humidity, because I sweat a lot, and if it is pretty humid, I'll be in trouble. I guess I'll have to make a 'gametime' decision given wide range of conditions we could be facing, but I did feel good about the run yesterday, along with some of my recent runs. How many miles are you planning on this week/next?

Jon,

I was just figuring my milage for this up comming week. Looks like I'll be right around 43 again, but nothing too hard. I'll do some easy repeats tonight. Wed. I'll do a 6 mile tempo run, Sat I'll do 13 with the first 10 easy around 7:45 and the last 3 at 6:50.

All my other runs will be at an easy pace and not longer than 6 miles. I don't know what I'll do the next week yet, but I'll cut it way back.

Matt, how's the taper coming. My legs and body felt so thrashed yesterday, I just took the day off, my first non-Sunday rest day since early January. I feel much better today, but still havn't ran yet.

OK Matt, I assume you are packing those bags and getting ready to go. I propose we meet at the first drop off bus at the front of it by the engine at 8:30. Then we can hang for a while at the village. Call me sometime on Sat or Sun in Boston, or I'll call you. Have fun there this week. Boston is sweet!!!!

Rhett,

I'm gone already! Well, I'm still sitting here at work, but I'm 'gone'.

The taper's coming well. I pushed it harder than I should've on my 14 miler on Sat, but I just felt so good. Felt easy. I'll plan on 8:30 at the bus, and we'll talk this weekend. Looks like the weather should be okay (at least no freezing storms).

Was worried about spending a whole week out in Boston before the Marathon, but we had to go to a Sox and Celtics game (both won). And then we had to go visit Maine and New Hampshire (both beautiful). And then we had to go visit my Uncle out in Montague, MA (still same old Cliff), visit Harvard, hang out in Boston Commons, etc. etc. Not to mention eating all of the foods that go with such destinations – hot dogs, burgers, fish and chips, deep dish pizza, bread bowls, lobster. . . .. So it was a long week with a lot of walking (freedom trail), getting to bed at midnight, and I definitely felt it during the week. I did get 12 hours of sleep Saturday night, and got some decent sleep Sunday.

Met up with Rhett at the Athlete's village and sat with him, Smooth, Marc, and a few others' names I forgot, but all were very nice. We then headed up to the start about the time of the elite women's start. As we were walking up the hill close to the start, I had a really random Senator John Kerry run-in. He was just walking with the crowd and no one seemed to notice. I saw him at the last second and I shook his hand with a “Hi John Kerry”. He then wished me good luck in the race.

Rhett and I had a plan of a very close 1:30 half and then sneaking in just under 3 for the finish. We both didn't want to go out too fast. The only issue was that Rhett had some issues (probable tear) with his plantar fascitis during the week and was unsure about how it was going to hold up. We both were on the same page as far as leaving each other whenever we needed to and running our own race, but I really liked his pace splits for the miles, so I thought I'd run as much with him as possible. I Enjoyed the finish line-like crowd from the start, and couldn't believe how continuous it was. Weather was nice, but there definitely was a headwind for most of the race with some pretty heavy gusts. I'd take that over the rain/cold that was to come later on that night. The wind to me was a lot like St. George last year.

Splits for first 13 miles:

6:53, 6:35, 6:37, 6:40, 6:49, 6:48, 6:46, 6:49, 6:50, 6:55, 6:58, 6:43, 6:52

Felt really good/energetic. Never felt like I ever came close to breathing hard. Wellesely College was crazy! I really don't know how they can maintain that kind of enthusiasm for all 25,000 runners! I ran my hand through my hair prior to arrival and asked Rhett if I looked okay, then tried to give as many fives as possible. Just after Wellesely, Rhett's foot was in bad shape. He'd been overcompensating, and it not only hurt his foot more, but had caused other problems with his form. He decided to go into cruise control and I headed on.

It was a great feeling to power up the Newton hills and pass so many runners. I noticed that there wasn't as much eye contact between the runners/crowd much anymore and tried my best to smile and give thumbs up as much as I could, and was amazed at what kind of reaction it would get. Very, Very, impressed with the crowd. Powered up Heartbreak and then pushed it the next mile. The only hill that felt like it took anything out of me was the little underpass at about mile 25. The last couple of miles were a blur, but I kept passing more and more people and finished in 2:58:29, a whopping 7 second P.R.! I really am excited about the finish, because I always wondered what I could do on a “legit” course (vs. Utah downhill marathons). I was also happy I posted a negative split and was able to actually run down Boylston St. instead of finishing in survival mode.

Splits for last half:

6:53, 6:49, 6:38, 6:55, 6:55, 6:40, 6:49, 6:57, 6:26, 6:43, 6:38, 6:43, 6:52, 6:33 for .34 miles

Apparently with the crowds, I couldn't run the tangents well and ended up running 26.34 miles.

Thought I had a P.R. Easily based on my Garmin's overall pace of 6:47/mile, but forgot that it is based on the 26.34 my watch registered and not the 26.2 of the actual course. Instead I sneaked out the P.R. I owe it all to John Kerry's well wishing!

You ran a perfect race. Way to go. I'm making not of your splits to use for pacing in the future. You finished 2 seconds and 5 places ahead of a guy in my running club and your second half splits are almost identical. You must have had the perfect race plan.

From mattk on Wed, Apr 22, 2009 at 16:56:08 from 69.27.13.147

Thanks again guys (and gals Josse and Bonnie).

Andy,

It really worked out well for me. I was unsure of what I'd be able to do, so I took it easy the first half and wanted to be strong for the hills and use the psychological stimulus of passing people the last 6-7 miles to keep me going. You know how it is when you start passing people, it gets addicting and you find strength/energy you didn't know you had. I thought this would be a great race for that with the hills and all (plus the crowd egging you on).

From Rhett on Wed, Apr 22, 2009 at 19:35:04 from 170.215.58.122

Matt, it was a pleasure running with you. You were awsome to watch going through Wellesely. I couldn't believe the energy you expended through there. Look at those splits through Newton. Those hills didn't even phase you. Congrats on a great run and a PR. I hope to run with you again another day, but without injury.

Thanks! You had an awesome race yourself, and I enjoyed your front-page face time on runnersworld!

It seems like a lot of people didn't think the wind was very bad, but I remember a pretty constant wind (and good one at that) for a lot of the race. I wonder how much it affected me. (probably not as much as my spastic high fives through the wellesely girls!)

From Richard Borget on Thu, Apr 23, 2009 at 22:26:10 from 71.199.12.164

Matt,

I was disappointed in not breaking 3 hours but not too bad. I'm jealous of you. To answer your question, I slowed down the week before but that was it. 2 weeks before I put in a big week, that may however have been a mistaken strategy. I would love to come to Provo and run sometime if you want to hook up as it seems our pace is similar? My PR was 2:54 at St George. Anyway I am doing the Grand Slam including Ogden and St George For Sure, I will either do Park City or Top of Utah and possibly Both.

no effort! I really need to bust one out and see what I can do, because I really have no clue. What's your race plan this year Paul?

From RivertonPaul on Thu, Apr 23, 2009 at 11:03:22 from 67.42.27.114

I'm clueless myself. Had I not played around on vacation earlier this month I might be a bit more prepared, but life goes on. I'd like to go sub 3:00, but need to be realistic. I think I'm not quite to sub 3:00 shape right now, but still have 3 weeks. I suppose I need to bust out a real 5k (which I never do) to see where my fitness is and then start following Tinman's training paces based on that. Paul Peterson, Cody, Jon, and some others have had major success with his program.

From mattk on Thu, Apr 23, 2009 at 11:12:59 from 69.27.13.147

I hear ya. This year is my "grand slam" year, where I'm being stupid and trying to do many mediocre marathons vs. concentrating on doing a couple very well. I think I'll hunker down next year and really get serious about traing better and being more focused on getting a big P.R. I really think I'm capable of a low 2:40's if I train right. It's hard though, because I never want to lose any of the "fun" of it, and I'm having a lot of fun with it now. I don't know if I want to have to make a choice of whether to "play around on vacation" or scrap it for running, you know? I kind of like both. I'll have to look more into the Tinman. I've heard people have done well with it.

From rhett on Thu, Apr 23, 2009 at 14:55:47 from 170.215.58.122

I'm sure you could get down into the low 2:40s Matt with the proper training and diet. You made Boston look easy under not ideal conditions. Nice to hear you're out getting some easy miles in and the legs aren't sore. My legs don't feel like I ran a marathon at all, but I don't get to run for probably a month. )-:

Very happy with race considering the lingering injuries after Boston.  Was very worried that I've lost some fitness with my spotty training last couple of weeks while dealing with my achilles/calf.

Wife and I stayed with her Sister's family in Willard and I slept in a house down the street that he is trying to sell that is supposed to be haunted.  I kept waiting to hear noises all night and have some ghost slip into my bed, but nothing happened.

While waiting for the bus, saw Paul (rivertonpaul) and enjoyed the ride up talking to him.  Knowing that we'd be shooting for the same goal, we decided to run as much as we could together.  Bus got lost on the way up, so we only had about 30 minutes to start once we got up there.  Did the potty thing and got up front.  Saw some other bloggers and an old mission pal that was running his first marathon in 7 years.  He's a triathalete stud and was shooting for sub three (ended up beating me by 35 seconds after going out with a 1:21 first half!).  Eyed a clown at the start and put him on my list of 'sure don't want to get beat by him'.  Paul and I headed off and took the downhill as it came and tried not to hold back too much, but also making sure we weren't laboring too hard.  I was really excited to use my straw I'd tucked into my watch band for the aid stations.  (just a regular straw cut off a bit.  I thought it would have helped me with my powerade spillage).  Unfortunately, I dropped it just as I went for my first clean drink!  I laughed a bit about that.  I'll try again.

First 8 miles:

Paul wanted to go about 7:00 through the rolling hills between 8-14, and we might have gone a little faster than he had planned.  Sorry Paul if I screwed up your race plan.  We did tuck behind the eventual Women's winner for about 7 miles and kept pace with her.  At the 14 mile hill, Paul was going to take it a little more reserved, and went on as I was feeling better than I thought I'd feel at that point.  Next 8:

6:48, 6:51, 6:58, 6:51, 6:57, 7:04, 7:08, 6:44

Really wanted to cruise on the canyon portion and I passed a lot of people there.  I don't remember anybody passing me after 13.1.  Next 5:

6:35, 6:20, 6:21, 6:27, 6:24

Saw something blue running a ways ahead and remembered the clown.  How could I forget!? It goes without saying that I picked it up a bit.  I actually have to give this bozo some props!  I can't believe he ran with a full wig, glasses and full legs, arms, etc.  I think he told me after that he finished right around 3:00.  I know a lot of people enjoyed it.

Saw Sasha around mile 22 at an aid station and he ran with me for a hundred yards or so helping me with the powerade.  Thanks!

I've never really minded the 1/2 marathon people that you run through the last 6-7 miles (They are very nice and supportive as I run by, and I encourage them as well), but I actually did run into a lady at about mile 23.  I tried as best I could to run the tangents, but had to run around some groups.  I saw a good 3 foot gap on the right hand side and yelled "on the right, on the right, on the right", but despite a good 5 second warning, she hopped over to the right just as I was trying to pass and hit her.  (not too hard, I was able to put on the brakes a bit).  So I figuratively and literally hit the wall at that point.  I felt like I was switching over to FBP (see discussion forum).  Passed the number 1 Woman (finished 2nd), at about 23, and kept picking runners off.  I'm not a big fan of the trail, but I think it's just because of the state my body is in at that point.  I think I may have passed Bill Mandler at some point on the trail and remember talking to a couple different guys, but didn't know it was him.  Looking at the times, he must have gained on me at the end.  Anyhow, that last mile feels like an eternity.

Last 5 miles:

6:16, 6:02, 6:32, 6:53, 7:04  (7:02 for last .3; my garmin read 26.30)

Crossed the finish with a net time of 2:55:10 and 16th place.  PR by 3:19, and most notably, I beat the clown.

Got a post-race massage (more for comfort than function), and chatted with my mission pal while we got the rub-down.

Happy about the day/race.  It was my 5th PR in a row.  I know it has to end soon (if not next month, then by Park City for sure), but I'm enjoying the ride!!

Wow, congratulations! I can only dream of such feats. When you gonna hit 2:45?

From Bill Mandler on Mon, May 18, 2009 at 22:50:36 from 24.119.13.42

Matt, You passed me right before we turned on the final street. I remember talking to you. I guess we better get to know each other since we are now 1-2 in the Grand Slam and you have me by 13 seconds!!! Nice Job on Saturday!!!

From Rhett on Tue, May 19, 2009 at 13:02:40 from 170.215.58.122

Matt, great race. I'd try and do the math, but that might hurt my brain. How much of a negative split did your run? You have run such smart races lately. I'm sure that 2:45 will happen eventually.

From mattk on Tue, May 19, 2009 at 13:20:47 from 69.27.13.147

Bill,

really? I wouldn't have guessed our times would be 1-2, but that's great! That should make the other races a lot more fun!!

Rhett,

I think my first half was 1:28:05 and 2nd was 1:27:05. I think I put in a pretty good effort as I am still pretty sore. (maybe because I went home and helped my brother move all Sat night).

Looks like you're doing well in the water. Keep it up and don't run too early!

From RivertonPaul on Tue, May 19, 2009 at 13:23:30 from 67.42.27.114

That explains it, I went through the half in 1:28:06 -- so Matt, you were already blazing ahead of me.

Bill and MattK -- I hadn't even considered the Grand Slam as I was running. Had I kept that in mind, perhaps I could have saved a few minutes.

10 Miles.  Ran a couple miles with Sasha, Jeff and some others.  Felt really tired/beat up today.  Still residual from the race.  Achillis was tolerable.  Sped up to about 7:00 for a portion with the others, while almost everything else was around 8:00 pace.  7:48/mile average.  At least it felt good mentally to run today.

Well yeah, I think you would feel beat up just a few days after running such a stinking fast marathon.

5 mile hike in Zion national park up angel's landing and back.  Ran the switchbacks which wore me out.  Don't know what happened on the way down with the chain part, but tripped on something and fell sideways/backwards down a slight decline and landing about 6 ft from the edge!!  Messed up my shoulder/wrist in the process.

Later on, ran 10 miles in St. George.  Don't know the roads, but ran the lonely road that runs above St. George to the north (I think skyline) and then down the road that goes to Ivins for a while, then back down the hill to St George and back accross to the hotel.

Shoulder hurting a lot.  Had to modify my arm swing.

7:45 average for the 10 miles.

Saw some FRB jackets waiting for the bus and went up to introduce myself.  Rode up to the start with Jeff Shadley, Bill Mandler, Kory Wheatly and Walter Brown.  Nice guys.  Good to get to know the fast guys a little bit.

Race started off fine.  Headed out in the top 25.  Could tell right away I didn't feel as "ansty" to go fast and as fresh as I felt in other recent races.  Ran with Richard Borget for a little while.  Also ran with "Ryan" and a "Bill" who were also in the Grand Slam this year.  Ryan finished a minute behind me in Ogden.  Bill has been running for 4 years after smoking all of his life.  I think that's pretty great to not only quit, but find some sort of hobby that puts you back into a healthy lifestyle.  Sometimes that's the only way.  The other Bill (Mandler) was up ahead of us by about a minute.  Came out of the canyon and warned the others that the other 10 miles of "downhill" would not feel like it at all.  Started feeling my right knee hurting at the end of the canyon.  Knew it wouldn't hinder me other than just causing damage I'd be feeling the next few days.

I Really focused on running the tangents well this race; Way too many curves to be lazy at this.  My Garmin ended up reading 26.23. . .not too bad.  Passed my wife and girls at mile 18 (right next to my house) on the river trail, and that was the highlight. . . It was all downhill from there.  I was starting to suffer.  I don't know what to chalk it up to.  I think a big factor today was the humidity.  I was sweating quite a bit from very early in the race.  That, coupled with the shot glasses of powerade/water, and I think I was behind schedule on hydrating.  I've just got so used to getting enough fluids while keeping my run going that I didn't even think about stopping/slowing for a second to grab enough cups.

Heading back on Center street back east and Bill Mandler was about 20ish seconds ahead.  I really hate long straight stretches of road near the end of marathons.  They kill me psychologically.  Unfortunately, Bill pulled up at about mile 23 with what seemed to be a pretty bad heal issue.  He was having such a great race and this messed up the last miles for him.  My heartrate was insane the last few miles.   Saw MichelleL again at this point and encouraged me on at such a tough point for me.  It must have been killin' her watching while still dealing with her injury; Hope there is an end to it soon Michelle!

I walked a few times the last couple of miles and was getting really dizzy.  I felt like I could black-out and collapse at any moment.  Heart rate kept climbing.  Didn't even pay attention to time, but just wanted to hold off the two people behind me.  I did, and finished with a 3:00:05 and in 12th place.  Immediately after the finish, I staggered to find the massage tent (more to lay down than get a massage).  As I sat in a chair waiting, I could barely open my eyes or drink from the water bottle.  I really was having a tough time.  After about 30-40 minutes I finally was able to walk around somewhat normally and started to put some food/drink back into the system.

Stuck around for the awards ceremony 'cause I actually got an age division award.  That was a first.

Tough, tough race for me today, but happy with the place and the effort.  I'm sure glad I've got a couple months until Park City.  3 in the last 3 months have been wearing me down.

Splits:

6:39, 6:24, 6:40, 6:38, 6:53, 6:26, 6:32, 6:34, 6:40, 6:34, 6:37, 6:38, 6:34, 6:37, 6:42, 6:46, 6:51, 6:55, 6:52, 7:02, 7:08, 7:09, 7:19, 7:35, 7:44, 7:57, 7:24 for last .2

Hey I think you still did great for the conditions and course, I wasn't as good at cutting those tangents. I ended up with 26.33, that was not fun to think about at the end. These kind of marathons a character builders:)

Great race Matt! I was going to say that the humidity probably zapped you pretty good. While I wasn't racing, I did run, and the humidity was really high (for around here). Great race!

Matt, with my issues on Saturday I had no idea what you went through as well. I can't believe you were able to finish when you felt like passing-out. I guess it just goes to show how STRONG marathon runners like us really are. Nice job!!! I will see you in Park City. We have someone to chase down...he ran a 2:56 Saturday.

Nice advice: "Although I don't have any advice how to mentally shut down the signals of pain, I do get into a mindset that helps me through the pain, and even sometimes helps me inflict more pain. I used this a lot in high school 5k's, and recently in marathons. I just tell myself that "tomorrow I'll wake up and will not feel this pain" (well, I'll be sore, but not in the extreme pain I am currently in), "This won't last". Tomorrow when I feel normal, I will regret looking back and knowing that I didn't push myself as hard as I could have. I think many people don't use mind tricks to get past the pain, but find ways to motivate them through the pain.

Basically, pain is temporary. Push it (within reason, don't do something that will cause injury), and you will feel much better the days after knowing that you're the master and the body is your slave "mind over matter".

Rich,

Awesome race to you!! Way to go get the sub 2:50! With some more speed work, you'll be ready for another break- through next year.

As far as my race, I'm not too disappointed; I have no right to be!! I didn't do myself any favors the last 1.5 months and it was apparent Sat. I thought I'd go for broke and try to keep my place in the slam, because finishing 10-20 minutes slower (walking/running last 5 miles)didn't matter at that point.

I'll regroup and hopefully be in good shape for a good spring Marathon!
